Arsenal have been looked upon in recent years as a team that seemingly has the tendency to underachieve. It would be unjust to say that they disappoint, on the neutrals behalf anyhow, but the Gunners following may have a different viewpoint, with their side trophy-less since beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final in 2004-05 on penalties, after an incredibly dour 120 minutes of football. Arsene Wenger’s ability is unquestionable when it comes to discovering raw talent, and....

If it's true that to gain a better perspective of how the league table is likely to pan out you should wait until after the Christmas period, then things are looking very positive for Chelsea indeed. Marking manager Carlo Ancelloti’s words, the Stamford Bridge side have yet to hit their peak, but still find themselves five points clear at the summit, having yesterday had to come from behind to see off a battling Fulham. However, although Chelsea have the psychological edge, Manchester Unit....

As much as money and greed may have crept its way in, and became a predominant feature of football in the past decade, there have been so many positive and remarkable moments to relish. Granted, financial wealth has also brought many plus points to the English game. Extensive television coverage has made the sport increasingly available to a much greater audience, prosperous talent is now brought to the Premier League in abundance, with the world’s greatest players gracing these shores. An....

Make no mistake; the noughties were an eventful time for football. The game has developed drastically, changing from the top, down to the bottom - none more so than in England. There have been numerous inspiring moments from the past decade, the Arsenal invincible’s, Liverpool’s European exploits, all English Champions League finals, to name but a few. Supporters will have their own found memories from following their beloved club the length and breadth of the country of course, but ....

There may have had an air of inevitability about it all, but despite Manchester City overcoming Sunderland in an enthralling encounter on Saturday, Mark Hughes was shown the door at Eastlands. Not that the result had much bearing on the forthcoming events as it was clearly evident that Roberto Mancini was going to be installed as the Welshman’s successor long before the axe eventually fell. If reports are to believed, Hughes was given a number of objectives when the Abu Dhabi owners comple....

It isn’t unusual when a manager is relieved of his duties from a Championship club, especially at such a highly significant period of the season. However, to have three casualties in as many days merely demonstrates the unbelievable pressure placed upon individuals given the unenviable task of making a club successful, almost overnight. Jim Magilton’s departure from Queens Park Rangers had an air of inevitability following the club suspending the former Northern Irish international w....

Brain Laws tenure as Sheffield Wednesday boss ended yesterday, after the Owls slipped into the relegation area following a 3-0 humbling at The Walkers Stadium on Saturday. It was the final straw for the Hillsborough board, who decided that Laws couldn’t take the club any further and his contract was mutually terminated with immediate affect. Chairman Lee Strafford said: “We believe a change at this time can deliver fresh energy and direction. Brian Laws has done a very good job at Sh....

You’re having a shocker. Every touch is coming off your shin, every pass which would normally be carried off with eye of the needle accuracy is going straight to the opposition. Everybody has been there, even the best of us, the crem de la crème, and if somebody says they haven’t, brand them a liar. Whatever level, whatever type of game, whether it be 11-a-side, or at 5 or 6-a-side with Leisure Leagues, shockers have a way of creeping up, like a dangerous black widow. However,....

Liverpool’s disastrous season is one that has been well documented, with enough doom and gloom to last a decade. The weekend’s goalless draw at Ewood Park highlighted the shortcomings that have ended the Reds season by mid December. Forgot the Europa League, its no consolidation for a side with so much pride in Europe – at the highest level. It would be naive to believe that the players are going to sit back and take the shortcomings lightly, but Steven Gerrard’s comments....

No sooner were the balls drawn and the group stages officially confirmed, the media bandwagon talked of a doddle to the knockout stages, and a great chance of going all the way. Where have we heard this before? Granted the draw was kind to England. The proposition of France was a strong possibility, whilst drawing Algeria could prove to be advantageous opposed to Ivory Coast or Ghana. However, the sides drawn along with the Three Lions are in the World Cup through merit. They haven’t been ....

Arsene Wenger is a man who is resoundingly respected throughout the game of football. The Frenchmen has demonstrated his second to none coaching abilities, the way he can tactically mastermind a game, on top of being able to scout and produce some of the best raw talent around. All of this is very commendable, and Wenger is a great asset to the sport, but on occasions his temperament and uncharacteristic actions undermine the plus points which he brings to English football. The term uncharacteri....

Just when it seemed as if the scandal and controversy surrounding Thierry Henry’s handball had subsided, it was yesterday revealed by FIFA chief Sepp Blatter that the Republic of Ireland have requested an extra place in South Africa. Blatter has stated that he will bring the application “to the committee”, when they meet on Wednesday. It does now feel that the issue has been dragged out a little, and surely the likelihood of FIFA granting the Irish a place in the 2010 World Cup....
