The Domestic football season ended yesterday as Nick Powell’s wonder goal was enough to see Crewe on the way to beating Cheltenham. The 2-0 win that his first half strike helped achieve also saw The Alex claim the last remaining promotion spot in the Football League. We all know how thrilling the end of the regular season was and how many twists and turns there were along the way, and only a fool would have tipped some of the things that happened. So we are back with an English team on the top of Europe after Chelsea’s victory at the weekend. It is a tremendous achievement from all concerned, although they may have rode their luck. In June, England’s new Manager is beginning his quest to put the national team there too. But, you wonder exactly how lucky England would have to get if they were to “do a Chelsea.” Last week Roy Hodgson named his squad for Euro 2012 and it caused much consternation in the press. No one can argue that the end to the Premier League season was remarkable. The scenes following Sergio Aguero’s goal were something that we haven’t witnessed for a generation and those last two minutes might just be the most exciting climax to a season ever – certainly since 1989 when Michael Thomas’ goal gave Arsenal the title with more or less the last kick of the season. Ticket allocation has been much in the news recently, whether it’s the shambles that is the Olympics (and that keeps going, too with yesterday’s news that another 900,000 tickets are going on sale to those that have been unsuccessful twice before) or Liverpool and Chelsea fans moaning about their amounts for the FA Cup final.
