Malvern Mavericks was founded in May 2010 as an 8 man squad consisting of goalkeeper Jimmy Davies, defenders David Rowley and Ian Rowley-Callaghan, midfielders Shane Jackson, Lee Buckland, James Normington and Peter Raffaelli and forward Adam Lunn, to enter a 5-a-side tournament for McDonald’s employees. The team didn’t fair too well and didn’t make it out of the group stage, a 5-0 win being the best result managed. However, due to it being an enjoyable day they decided to enter a league under the captainship of Lee Buckland, with Jimmy Davies as vice-captain.
Season 1: Adding a 9th player to the squad, forward Chris Buckland, and replacing Peter Raffaelli with defender Matthew Green, they were all set to go. Their first game proved some practise was needed, losing 20-2 to Drunken Dynamos. Their second game brought them their first point, an 8-8 draw with Funky Bears. Other notable wins were league games against The Beach Boys and Real Madras and a point’s match win against Drunken Dynamos, who went on to become champions. The first season ended with them finishing 5th with 9 points.
Season 2: At the beginning of this season James Normington (who had not played a single game) was replaced by midfielder Harrison Blood, who helped the team win 3 of the first 5 games of the season, including a 7-6 win against Little & Large and an 11-4 win against The Beach Boys. However after 5 games he called time on his stint with the team and a replacement was sought after. He went on to play for Allstar Athletics FC. Chris Buckland also called it a day early on in the season due to travel and was replaced with defender Samuel Yaxley with Ian Rowley-Callaghan moving into midfield. Although finishing with 10 points this time round they finished one place lower in 6th and received the wooden spoon due to the teams below quitting the league.
Season 3: This season proved to be difficult, finishing 7th with only 6 points, and retaining the wooden spoon due to there not being an 8th team for the whole season, A replacement for Harrison Blood finally arrived in forward Martin Reeves. The only league win of the season came against S4G, winning 14-6. S4G had began the match with only 3 players and after a goal route in the first half they loaned them Ian Rowley-Callaghan for the second period to make the game more balanced. They did beat them 3 weeks earlier in a points match 14-9 when they did have a full team. Their only other win that season came in another points match, 8-4 against Real Madras.
Season 4: This season saw a drastic squad change, with Samuel Yaxley failing to play a single game the previous season he was replaced with defender Robert Lincoln. Adam Lunn had quit the team due to travel late in the previous season and captain Lee Buckland only played the first 3 games before moving away. Jimmy Davies took over as captain with Ian Rowley-Callaghan becoming vice-captain. After trialling a number of players, forward Keir Sellars and midfielder Scott Sellars came in as replacements and gave the squad a much needed boost, winning their début game 20-5 (a point’s match against S4G) and the next league game, 9-6 against Real Madras. They finally ended an unwanted record of losing every one of our 7 league games against Ajax Trees Down with a last gasp 7-6 win. The season ended with a 6th place finish with 10 points
Season 5: This season started off with 3 defeats, losing to Ajax Trees Down, Real Average and new boys Floating Goats FC. In the 4th game of the season they picked up their first points in a 14-5 win over S4G, who had again only managed to field 4 players. Several players had been missing for various reasons at the start of the season, Keir and Scott Sellars were both away for the first 2 games, and then Scott picked up an injury and missed a further 2 games. Robert Lincoln picked up a shoulder injury and missed 3 games then, after 2 games back, tore his cruciate ligament and missed the rest of the season, and Shane Jackson failed to play for the whole of the season. However, Lee Buckland returned to be a guest for 3 games, taking his goal scoring tally to over 100 in the process. Keir and Scotts younger brother, Ben Sellars, came along and made a few guest appearances and performed well earning him a regular squad place. The seasons highlight came in a 13-3 demolition of title chasing Allstar Athletic FC. The season ended again with 10 points, but one place lower in 7th.
Season 6: The season started better than most previous seasons with a 5-5 draw with Ajax Trees Down, however the team lost all the remaining 6 games before the winter break, but with 2 of those matches being points matches they still collected 5 points in the opening half of the season. The first win came in an 8-4 defeat of The B Team, who only had 4 available players. We also saw the return to availability of Shane Jackson for the first time in 6 months, he will, however, remain on the fringes until a squad spot becomes vacant. 30th January 2012 saw the return of Robert Lincoln from a 4 month injury lay off, coming on to play a cameo role in a 11-6 loss to Malvern Mans, this would prove to be premature as it was later diagnosed that he would reqiure physio. The most convincing performance came in a points match against title chasing Floating Goats FC. With key players missing and no substitutes they managed to pull of a 12-6 upset, Ian Rowley-Callaghan putting in a faultless display. This was followed by an 11-5 win over Ajax Trees Down who did only manage to field 4 players. The season finished with a Malvern Mavericks record of 13 points and a joint highest 5th place.
Season 7: This season started with a 10-6 loss to Ajax Trees Down followed by a 17-3 thrashing by reigning champions Real Average. They then beat Ajax Trees Down in a points match 14-6, with Keir Sellars netting an incredible 10 goals, moving him above Lee Buckland into highest amount of goals for Malvern Mavericks. Harrison Blood came back to make a guest appearance for a game in which only 3 active squad members were available. A midway points match brought about a suprise 8-8 draw against multi-time champions Real Average, a game in which goalkeeper Jimmy Davies scored directly from a throw out on his 100th game. Other highlights came in a 9-2 win against Vagisil United, and coming back from being 5-2 down at half time to BTEC Banter to grab a 7-7 draw
