Penhill and Lads close grip on Abbey Meads titles

A dramatic night in the Swindon Sunday six a side from Abbey Meads Primary School ended with Penhill taking an important step towards the league title with a crucial victory against Boca. In the first division The Lads made an equally important move with a win against title rivals Lesaux Solid Crew.

The game of the night got us underway on Pitch 1 as Boca and Penhill, level on points at the top of the table, fought for dominance in the league. Penhill eventually came out on top 5-2 with Craig putting in a fantastic performance for Penhill his energy and enthusiasm for the football just allowed Penhill to neutralise Boca’s attacking potential. Boca are not out of the running just yet but they cannot afford to drop any more points in the final two games.

In the second game in this division Old’em took on Toit Nups. Before the game not many gave Old’em much of a chance given the impressive way that Toit Nups have come into the league. However, Old’em gave a really good account of themselves and were unlucky not to get something from the game. Admittedly Alan in goal was simply fantastic as he did his best to deny Toit Nups captain Nick for long periods of the game. Eventually he found the crucial breakthrough that gave them the edge. Toit Nups have been unbeaten since they joined the league and are already eyeing the title for next season.

In the First Division the night started with a thoroughly entertaining game between the two teams hoping to avoid finishing bottom of the table and claiming the wooden spoon prize. Ajax came out on top thanks to a captains performance from Connor up front. Cotswold will now go into the prize draw for finishing bottom but have shown vast improvements over the course of the season and so will hope they can use this to improve next time out.

The next game saw the top two in the division go head to head. It turned out to be a tight game with not much to separate the two sides. The Lads just about managed to edge the midfield battle by getting in the faces of Lesaux players and stopping them from playing their usual free flowing football. The result puts the Lads in a really strong position going into the final two games of the season although they have on paper the harder fixtures moving into the final two weeks of the season.

In the final game of the night Game of Throw-Ins produced probably their best performance in what has been a disappointing season to comfortably see off Green Star in a 13-5 win. Jordan was back to his best with some excellent link up play and sublime finishing. For Green Star this is the second disappointing result in a row for the boys in yellow and means they are now out of the running for the title division 1 title. However, they are still plenty of positives David and his boys can take from this season as the look forward to the next campaign.

Thanks everyone for another great night.
