Season Finale

After six months and many interruptions, one of the longest ever running six a side football seasons came to a close last night.

Originally starting in October, following a 7 month layoff due to the first Covid wave, Leisure Leagues Beverley 6-a-side football league managed to get through three weeks before Lockdown 2.0 was announced in November. December saw a return to football with a further three games played before the Christmas break, but the promise of more football in the new year was quickly halted when Lockdown 3.0 was being announced as we played out our first games of 2021.

Three long months in lockdown followed before a welcome return in March was quickly followed by the Easter weekend. We finally made it in the end last night! 6 months for a 10 game season must be a record!

On the pitch, Gylfi Pleasures had already secured a consecutive league title with a couple of games to spare but put on a show to end the season in style, running up a 7-0 victory over a notoriously stubborn Inter Peroni side, who had already secured their position in the Premier League, consolidating following promotion from Division One last season.

At the other end of the table, Get The Sudocrem FC secured their status by default following a late forfeit by Stud Utd, who have also withdrawn from the league. Stud Utd were one of the founder members of the league, and have challenged for the title consistently with a best placed finish of second; the lads have always played the game in a good spirit and with plenty of quality and will surely be missed.

In the mid-table, Maradona Kebab held on for a 2-1 win over already relegated Beverley La Coruna and nipped into second place as a result. It shows how tight the league is that Maradona Kebab were occupying a relegation spot just a couple of weeks ago. Beverley La Coruna will be looking to bounce straight back and will be among the front runners next season in Division One.

The story of the night came in Division One, where DST Leconfield secured the title in style and in doing so became the first team to record a perfect season. Ospina Colada went close in the first ever season, dropping points in just one game, but the guys from DST went one better to record a perfect 10 wins from 10. Ospina's however was a 14 game season, and in the top division, so debate will rage over which is the better record!

Realistically the title was already in the bag, promotion was secured and anything less than a defeat, plus a win for The Academy and a goal difference swing of 32 would see them up as champions; DST saw out the season comfortably with a 4-0 victory over Dyslexia Untied.

The Academy took the victory against Have A Day Off to finish their own impressive season strongly, with 8 wins from 10 and only dropping points against the champions; it will be intriguing to see what both these teams can offer in the Premier League next season.

Elsewhere SD7 FC were relieved to get the monkey off their back and finally record a victory - 3-1 Vs Expected Toulouse - and put some points on the board in the last game to end a season of turmoil on a high.

The season end has timed quite well, with the bank holiday next Monday there are no games scheduled so the lads will get a two week break and come back firing for the new season on Monday 10th May.
