Thursday 22nd April 2021 League Report

The Solent and University of Southampton Thursday 6-a-side league at Cantell School

The evening began with ‘Don’t Touch Matip’ against ‘Stem K Dons’ and ‘Punani Palace’ against ‘Mayflower FC B’.  In the former, goals were exchanged in an orderly fashion but, with ‘Don’t Touch Matip’ too focused on trying to out-skill their opposition, ‘Stem K Dons’ capitalised and came out 5:3 winners.  Meanwhile, in the latter game, ‘Mayflower FC B’ comfortably beat ‘Punani Palace’ 2:0, a scoreline that doesn’t quite reflect the errant finishing of the winning team.  Next up were ‘SNS’ vs. ‘Choomah FC’, the latter of whom won 4:1, while the evening’s highlight game was a match between ‘Aston Birra’ and ‘I Kante Fit My Willian’.  The latter rushed into a dominant, early lead, scoring four goals in as many minutes but ‘Aston Birra’ remained in the game and continued to play good football, eventually pulling back goal-by-goal.

With rapid goals in ten seconds, ‘Aston Birra’ completed a comeback from 5:1 down to win the tie 6:5.  In the last round of matches on the card, ‘Culture FC’ faced ‘5 in the Pink, 1 in the Stink’ in a battle of the teams in pink – Uni of against Solent.  By far the game of highest quality, ‘5 in the Pink, 1 in the Stink’ outclassed their rivals in every department in a sensational display of small-sided football. A mix of outrageous skills and clinical finishing saw them race to a 7:0 lead, before a rare break on the counterattack by ‘Culture FC’ was well-executed for a consolation goal.

However, their misery didn’t end there as, with the last kick of the match, a tiring ‘Culture FC’ player put the ball into the back of his own net to end the game 8:1 to the boys from Solent. In the other match, ‘Levant FC’ thrashed local stalwarts, but new to this league, ‘Pathetic Athletic!’ 13:2.  A mismatch from the very beginning, the university team’s youth and athleticism showed and quickly went to work dispatching their opponents.  With fitness issues, ‘Pathetic Athletic!’ were, at one point, reduced to four men, with the score ever-increasing, before their opponents mercifully offered some players to even up the proceedings.
