Exeter maintain hold on trophy with tight draw vs Pique

Royal Wootton Bassett Monday Match report

It was another amazing night of six a side action in the RWB Monday six a side football league at Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. As expected, every team was in attendance and followed our new Covid protocols perfectly.

The first two games of the night were tight. Who Ate All Depays finally got a win under their belts with a 2-1 win against AC A Little Silhouetto of Milan. On the other pitch Alexandre LakofKet were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Deportivo De La Greenhill, despite having plenty of good chances.

In the second round of games there was a bit of a surprise as The Underdogs managed to secure a 2-1 win against 2 Goals 1 Cup.  Meanwhile, on pitch 2 The Unplayables came through their game against Moyes in the Hood with a solid 3-0 win. Their second win in a row means that they now stand a great chance of securing a strong finish to the season.

In the final game on Pitch A, Athletic Bilbao Baggins lost 2-1 to Nalgo FC who have perhaps been the strongest of the new teams since lockdown. It was a great competitive game with both teams having chances to win.

The final game of the night saw the top two go head to head. Exeter set up to hit Pique on the counter and were content to frustrate their opposition. This seemed to work wonders and things got even better when Ryan Wallace scored what can only be described as a wonder goal as he controlled the ball on his chest before teeing himself up and volleying the ball into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper no chance.

In the second half, Pique grabbed a goal back and looked like they were getting on top of Exeter. As the game entered the final minute, captain Jamie charged into Exeter’s box, he was clearly fouled but the ref decided (controversially) that the foul had been committed outside the box. The result being that the game ended in a draw. In hindsight this was probably a fair result but means that the status quo remains with Exeter 3 points clear at the top of the table.

Thanks everyone for a great night of football.

See you all next week!
