The Lads march on in the Swindon Academy six a side

The Thursday night Leisure Leagues Swindon Academy six a side is beginning to have a familiar feel to it with one notable exception. The Lads, following their second successive victory, have been able to extend their advantage at the top over Fat and Sassy who they are determined to push much harder this season.

In the first game of the night saw Fat and Sassy take on The Plough. After the game vice captain of the Plough had the following to say about his teams performance: People were probably expecting that we would be rolled over! The Ploughs poor performance last week certainly added to the expectation that this would be a one sided game. However the game was fairy close and The plough can come away with their heads held high after a strong defensive display. What let them down was their final ball which stopped them from creating chances. At half time Fat and Sassy held a narrow 1-0 lead. The second goal was scored through a penalty after the striker was brought down by the last man leading to a sin bin. One man down, The Plough couldn’t prevent them from adding one more. The win keeps Fat and Sassy in second but with maximum points from three games and level with the lads they are still in a strong position in the league.

In game two it was the turn of the Lads to show why they are genuine title contenders this season. They put seven past a rapidly improving Ba Boys side to confirm their status as the team to beat this season. The are averaging close to 10 goals a game difference between them and their opponents. However, Fat and Sassy are right there with them and have had arguably the more difficult fixtures so far in the first three games.

In game 3 Lean Team looked to make amends for a poor start to the season against Exeter Gently. They started on the front foot and went ahead early, Brad slotting it into bottom corner. Exeter quickly regrouped and came back making chances with Mik hitting the post. Then on the stroke of half time Owen scored a header to level things up. In the second half both teams had chances to win, with around a minute left Brad scored Lean Teams second into an open net at the far post. The win sees Lean Team jump into fifth place in the league while Exeter stay rooted to the foot of the table after three straight defeats.

In the final game of the night the leagues in form team 1980s legends went up against Spezial FC. The game was close throughout but 1980s Legends just about edged it over the course of the 30 minutes. They created the better chances and  were able to dig in and defend when Spezial did had the momentum. The legends have started the season brightly and consequently find themselves in third place in the league. It will be fascinating to see whether they can maintain this form over the course of a whole season and challenge the likes of The Lads and Fat and Sassy for the prize positions.

That concludes the nights action. There has been significant interest in joining this league ahead of the new season when we can extend the league to ten teams.
