Remember when Wales shocked the whole of Europe in 2016? When Gareth Bale lit up France and Joe Allen made it to the Team of the Tournament?

Well, three years on, a bunch of plucky hopefuls  – including players from Leisure Leagues competitions in Wales –  will be flying to Crete with similar aims on the small sided pitch.

After many training sessions and even more deliberation, Wales Manager Barry John, who is an experienced LL man, reffing and Match Night Supervising our leagues in Wales for many, many years, and his coaching team, consisting of Assistant Manager Owain Green, Coaches Will Morris and Lewis John, have decided that the following players will represent Wales at this year’s World Cup in Rethmyno.

Luke Jones                         5 Caps

Matt Morris                        1 Cap

Hakeem Farey                   0 Cap

Louis Gerrard                     0 Cap

Marcus Jones                    4 Caps

Shaun Williams                  2 Caps

Akeem Cullen                    3 Caps

Adam Orme                        0 Caps

Tyrell Webbe                     2 Caps

Dean Maynard                  7 Caps

Laurent Mondo                 17 Caps

The proud Welsh boss could barely hide his excitement when he said: “We have had many selection meetings and after all the soul searching and tough choices, we are delighted to announce the squad that will hopefully fire the Welsh Dragons glory.”

Barry added: “We will be adding one more player to the squad after the next session. I believe it was important to give everyone the best chance to show what they could offer.”

James Coe, LL Head of TV – who will be going to Crete to film the action, said: “it is fabulous to see so many LL players, ordinary lads from our network, being given the chance to represent their countries like this. We are sure they will do us and Wales proud, but more importantly, perhaps, inspire others in our network to know what can be achieved only through us.”

The squad will attend some more sessions to fine tune before they depart in October.
