A brand-new sporting concept is coming to Brecon as a netball league is starting next week. Social, community netball will never be the same again.
The competition gets underway on Monday at the state-of-the-art Christ College and Netball Leagues Manager Zoe Retter admitted she was excited by the prospect: “We cannot wait to get underway,” she said. “We are really pleased to be bringing this brand-new way of playing the sport to netball players. There has been tremendous interest in what are trying to do already and it is all shaping up to be a huge success.”
The league is open to anyone 16 years old or over with Zoe adding that she’d been delighted at the cross section of people that had signing up “We are determined to make the sport as accessible to everyone as possible,” she said.
Zoe has also been surprised at the amount of single players who had signed up, as she explained: “Ladies have been contacting us saying ‘we haven’t got a team, but we really want to play’ and its been lovely that we’ve been able to get these individuals into teams. Sport should be about friendship and bringing people together. That is exactly what we’ve been able to begin here.”
She wondered if the effects of the lockdowns and Covid-19 had led to the surge in people wanting to play netball: “There is no doubt whatsoever that the pandemic has taken a terrible toll on the health of the nation,” Zoe reasoned, “and the fact that these leagues are focussed on community fun means that people can just come out and enjoy their sport. That is a fantastic thing, and one we are thrilled to help with.”
All equipment is provided and only qualified umpires will be used, meaning that these leagues are entirely hassle free, or as Zoe puts it: “All you need to do is pay online before the game and play, we take care of everything else.”
