Fitness to seal 1st Calne six a side league title

On the penultimate night of the Leisure Leagues Calne Tuesday six a side from Beversbrook Sports Facility Fitness Box practically guaranteed they will be crowned champions with. 4-1 win against The Rushes. At the other end of the table RichTeaWellens resigned Holo FC to the wooden spoon prize after a 2-0 win.

In the first games of the evening Chicken Tikka Mo Salah and Holo FC both found themselves on the end of a crushing defeat. While it might look like Holo FC were in the game, in reality RichTea barely got out of second gear. Once they established a lead they were quite happy to play around with the football and wait for Holo to overcommit before launching a devastating counter attack with goals coming from Luke Woodvine and Jack Kearns.

In the other early kick off there was a return to form for Netsix and Chill after a poor run which saw them drop out of the title race. The score line may have flattered them somewhat but they won’t be complaining. They were ruthless when they needed to be and made the most of their chances. Chicken on the other hand struggled to impose themselves on the game. They struggled with the structure of their team ands by the time they sorted themselves out it was too late. Both of these teams will feel they should be higher up the league and will hope for better next season.

By far the most competitive game of the night was between TMT and Dads Dream Team Reborn. The Money Team’s performance once again underlined the general feeling among many that they would have been champions this season had they not missed the first three games of the season. To be only two points behind the leaders with only one game to go shows a remarkable level of consistency. Dads gave them a good run for their money (no pun intended) and were unlucky not to come away with a result. However, the defeat does mean that Dads will have to settle for second place provided they beat Holo FC in their final game.

In the final game the Rushes had a golden opportunity to get themselves back in the title race by beating table topping Fitness Box FC. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as they were comprehensively beaten 4-1. The difference between the two sides was evident early on when Fitness countered in numbers to provide the games opening goal. All game long Fitness were able to sit back and then rush forward with three or four players. They were able to also get back and defend in numbers when they were under pressure. The result on The Rushes was easy to see. They were denied space in crucial areas in attacking positions and as they pushed forward to get back into the game they left space in behind for Fitness to exploit. The result more or less confirms Fitness Box as champions baring a freak result next week. On balance they have probably been the strongest team but will no doubt have a battle on their hands to retain the title next season.
