Start of a Brand New Season in 18 team league!!

The Solent/University of Southampton Monday 6-a-side league at Cantell School

It was perfectly fitting for the opening night of the new Uni League Monday night season of the COVID-19 era to be as wet, cold and windy as Cantell School has seen.  Despite the miserable weather, all the teams turned up promptly and did not let their spirits be dampened.  The early kick-off was ‘Lads on Toure’ vs ‘Team

Name’.  ‘Team Name’ played the whole match with only five players, after a key sixth member had been forced to self-isolate earlier in the day.  With the extra man and multiple available substitutes, ‘Lads on Toure’ eased to a 6:3 victory but ‘Team Name’ put up a very good fight and had some lovely, sweeping moves, ending in great team goals.  The second match was ‘Cereal Killers’ vs ‘VSoc’, with ‘Cereal Killers’ cruising to a 9:3 victory.

A lower quality game, the more experienced ‘Cereal Killers’ bossed the game from start to finish, although there were some bright sparks from a couple of VSoc players.  The final match was ‘Put Matip In’ vs ‘Poutsoi’.  ‘Put Matip In’ dominated early on, with the help from a roster of substitutes, but ‘Poutsoi’ fought back well to 4:3, at which point the match felt like either team could run away with it.  In the end, ‘Put Matip In’ capitalised on this, and with the help from a couple of very good players, they notched another four goals to win 8:3, including one excellent long-range curling effort.  With all games running on time, the referees were very glad to blow the final whistle and get home to warmth and dryness.
