Alexandre LacOfKet shine in Gerard Buxton six a side

The season got back underway on Monday night in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side from Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. With several teams struggling with a Christmas hangover and some wider than usual waistlines, it was a great chance for an upset. Nevertheless there were several excellent performances from teams determined to start the year positively. Alexander LacOfKet and The Unplayable’s in particular looked outstanding.

In Game 1 The Unplayable’s revealed a new start signing which helped them to completely dominate their opponents The Underdogs. The 5-0 win helps the men in orange get their first points of the season and they are now hoping they can use the momentum from this win to put together a much more consistent campaign than they managed last season. Captain Justin is working on a few more recruits that will help them make the step up to the next level. For the Underdogs on the other hand it looks like being a long and difficult season.

In the second game two of the top teams in the league went head to head. Who Ate All Depays took on Norfolk ‘N’Chance in a quality game in which both showed their quality. It was an excellent football match. A much changed Norfolk team had some great chances but came up against the unmovable object that his Depays captain Jason in goal. At the other end Depays opener came after a lovely move finished by Dean Sutton. The provider then became the beneficiary for the second as Andy White managed to get his name on the score sheet. Norfolk did manage to grab one back but couldn’t find the equaliser that their good play deserved. The win keeps up Depays unbeaten run that extends well back into last season. For Norfolk it’s two defeats in two but they have played two of the strongest teams in the league.

The third game was another great match up between Athletic Bilbao Baggins and Gangsters Allardyce. It was a thoroughly entertaining game which gangsters eventually won 4-1. Last season Gangsters started the season too slowly to defend their title, but this result highlights that the lads are back and mean business this time around. For Athletic Bilbao Baggins it was a disappointing result more so for the manner of the performance rather than the result. This season the guys had their sights set on sustaining a title challenge but they will need to play much better if they are likely to have a chance of keeping pace with the top teams in the league.

Next up it was the leagues reigning champions Bailey’s Boys who took on FC Guava. Unfortunately the game started late and this prevented Bailey’s from adding more goals to what was a fairly comfortable 3-0 victory. The boys know that this season promises to be closer than ever and that goal difference could be the deciding factor. Teams should remember that they need to turn up on time for their game or risk forfeiting the match. For FC Guava this was always going to be a game in which they were going to struggle. They know that it’s the games against the teams around them that will determine where they will finish the season.

In the penultimate game one of the leagues newest teams took on The Plough. Alexandre LacOfKet were ruthless as they took apart The Plough to win 6-0. Oisin Erry was dynamic in the midfield. He was strong in the tackle, helping his side to regain possession and also showed some great skill up front to finish a fine team move. The boys have already shown in the first two games of the season that they have what it takes to put together an excellent season. They know each other’s games and have the energy to compete against anyone in the league. For The Plough they know they will need to raise their game to the levels they regularly reach in the Thursday league if they are to get on terms with the best teams in the league.

The final game of the night saw the return of Exeter Gently’s main man Ryan Baker after his long stint on the sidelines with a knee injury. He was straight back and into the thick of the action. Captain Pete will manage his return sensibly to ensure he doesn’t aggravate the injury. He played about 5-10 minutes and scored after being on for about a minute. After the game he promised there was more to come. There will need to be as next week sees the guys renew their rivalry with Bailey’s Boys. Of the other four goals, the highlight was one of the goals of the season, Jay managed to dance through 4 players before calmly putting it passed the keeper.

That game concludes the nights action and with only two games played in the season the campaign promises to be more action packed than ever. If you would like to join the league we are offering free entry for the whole month of January. As things stand the league is currently full but you will be in prime position to join the league ahead of the new season when we will hopefully be in a position to extend the league.
