League too close to call at Gerard Buxton six a side

The Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side from Gerard Buxton Sports Ground got underway on a freezing cold night this past Monday. However, after four games the league is hotting up and is now tighter and more exciting that ever. Five teams are tied at the top of the league with two more a point further back. What this season has already shown is that no team is going to run away with the league and that every team is beatable.

The night started with a tight encounter between two teams who should be up there competing for the title. Who Ate All Depays and Gangsters Allardyce we both cagey in the opening moments of the game cautious not to give anything away. Eventually the game finished in a draw meaning that both teams sit tied at the top of the table on 6 points however, Gangsters have a far superior goal difference compared to the more defensive minded Depays. There is still a long way to go in the season but I suspect these two will be closely matched at the top all season long.

Next up we saw another close match up between 2 Goals 1 Cup and Baileys Boys. Everyone expected Baileys to win this comfortably but two crucial errors gave 2 Goals a way back into the match and eventually allowed them to sneak away with a 2-2 draw. After the game Baileys captain Alex bemoaned his teams tactical error in bringing an attacker on for a defender which left them exposed on the counter attack and gave 2 Goals the equaliser that in reality was against the run of play. It means that Baileys join Gangsters and Depays on 6 points while 2 Goals sit 3 points further back but boosted by the result let’s see if they can kick on and challenge those teams above them.

In the third game we finally got to see what Norfolk ‘N’Chance can do when they have a fully fit squad to call upon. The victims on this occasion were The Underdogs who suffered a humiliating defeat. It was a statement to the test of the league to watch out and take notice. With their first points of the season on the board they will now hope to push on and challenge the teams above them. With plenty of time left on the season there is every chance of them getting in amongst the title protagonists and upsetting a few teams in the title race too.

Game four saw another close game as The Unplayable’s took on The Plough. Once again this was an opportunity for The Unplayables to show how far they have come since last season against a Plough side that are on their day a very tough side to break down. The final score was 2-1 to the Unplayable’s and showed the rest of the league that they will have to take the boys in orange seriously and not just expect them to roll over and allow themselves to be beaten. They currently sit second in the league just behind Gangsters on goal difference. Whether they can stay there only time will tell. They have some tough games coming up and will need to be at their best to get anything from them.

In the penultimate game of the night Alexandre LacOfKet saw off FC Guava to join the other four teams mentioned on 6 points. However, Guava put in their best performance of the season and might count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the match.

That left another hotly anticipated game between Exeter Gently and Athletico Bilbao Baggins. As expected Exeter Gently dominated possession from start to finish. However, they struggled to find the breakthrough. They seemed to want to walk the ball into the net and kept getting crowded out by an Athletic team that was dogged and resilient at the back. When they were able, they were quick to break. On one such occasion a slip from the last man put Athletic threw on goal. With time to think about where to put the ball he calmly slid the ball into the back of the net underneath the on rushing goal keeper. Inevitably Exeter came back and Athletic had to survive wave after wave of attack at times riding their luck but eventually they did succumb and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
