MATCH REPORT

It might have been a long time comingbut the Monday night league at the Gerard BuxtonSports Ground finally got underway and it was definitely worth the wait. It was an exhibition in six a side football and everyone had a great time.

Wirral Wubbish 1 V 1 2 Goals 1 Cup

2 Goals 1 Cup started with intensity before Wirral came back into it. However, 2 Goals had the better chances and may feel they should have taken all three points if it wasn’t for the excellent goal keeling performance of Wirral’s captain Robbie. He could do nothing about the opening goal of the new season which was a thunderbolt from Raisham Mudhar from just outside the box which settled beautifully in the bottom left hand corner. It looked for a long time like that goal would separate the two sides until a penalty from Josh Smith equalled it up mid way through the second half.

Silence of the Lahms 2 V 1 Bass Rugby

Both sides came out of the blocks with only one thing in mind - going all out in attack. This left both teams exposed at the back and the first to exploit this was the impressive Zack Stretch. He broke free, sprinting through to finish with a low shot. He continued to threaten Silence’s defence with impressive runs from midfield and was equally impressive at breaking up attacks with excellent positioning. However, the longer the game went on the more Silence came into the game. Captain George Staten started to dictate the play and in the second half they applied constant pressure, eventually equalising with a clever finish. Then in the dying moments of the game. Bass Rugby’s centre back Declan Hanks stepped into the box triggering a penalty that George calmly slotted home.

MOM: Zack Stretch

Sloblins 1 V 3 Expected Toulouse

Both teams started this match cagey and not wanting to give anything away. Eventually the breakthrough came when Tom Lawrence cut in from the right hand side to open the scoring. He took it past the defender before hitting the strike hard with his right foot. The shot was hit with such force that even though the goalie got in way he was unable to prevent the shot from hitting the back of the net. Harry then equalised for Sloblins with an outstanding effort. Heavily marked, he managed to find space to connect with the cross and volley the ball straight into the top corner. Jack Timbrell scored Expected’s second after a cut back cross was casually side footed into the side of the net. Jack’s second, Expected’s third, was even more impressive. Cutting in off the inside he took on the defender before smashing home to ensure a comfortable win for the new team against their more experienced opponents.

MOM: Jack Timbrell

Hardley Athletic 0 V 1 Gangsters Allardyce

Two of the favourites for the league title played in the final game of the night. Both teams played the ball around nicely and created plenty of chances. Gangsters looked the more comfortable on the ball and were able to test the goalkeeper on multiple occasions. Declan Ritchens was more than up for the challenge and showed why he is arguably the best goalie in the league. In the end a contentious penalty broke the deadlock.

MOM: Declan Ritchens
