Tight games in Leisure Leagues Swindon Monday six a side

Perhaps it was the cold weather, perhaps it was the anticipation over the later game between the top two, perhaps it was just the fact that all the game involved teams closely matched in the table. What is clear is that it was a night where the football in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side was fierce, competitive and closely fought. Only two games were decided by more than one goal.

With 2 Goals and Bass not showing up there was only one early kick off and that was between Gangsters and We Ate All Depays. With some key players missing it was always going to be a difficult match for Gangsters to get anything from. However, stand in captain for the night Kyle Brentnall will still be disappointed that the boys in black were not able to create more chances and put Depays keeper under more serious pressure. Depays similarly struggled to create too much in a tight game but were ruthless with the chances they did have. The first came after a good move down the right while the second came straight from a quick kick in that Gangsters failed to get organised for. The result doesn't change a great deal in the standings as both teams remain comfortably 3rd and 4th in the table.

The 20:30 kick offs were both incredibly tight games that were fiercely contested by all sides involved. The game between Unplayables and The Plough was extremely scrappy with neither team able to establish a foothold on the game. As a result chances were few and far between with the Plough managing to grab the only goals of the game. The win helps The Plough close the gap on those teams above them.

Athletico Bilboa Baggins and FC Guava both suffered heavy and disappointing results the previous week and so were keen to get back to winning ways this week. While Athletico were ultimately successful after securing a narrow 1-0 win, with the only goal of the game coming from Sam FC Guava will still be satisfied with the manner of the performance. They competed all over the park and were no doubt encouraged by the return of their captain Zak to the starting line up after. Everyone at Leisure Leagues Swindon would like to congratulate Zak on your wedding, we hope you had a brilliant day!

In the first of the final games Sloblins and the Underdogs played out a 0-0 draw in a game that will hardly go down as one of the more interesting of the season. Of the two the Sloblins will clearly be the more satisfied with the result. They were solid defensively and Underdogs, despite having the lion share of the possession, were unable to break them down.

This just left the big one. The game between the top two Exeter Gently and Bailey's Boys was full of tension and high energy even if it lacked the sort of quality we have become accustomed to with these two giants of the league. Will for Bailey's, who came back from Uni especially for this fixture, was outstanding and anything that was good from Bailey's came from him. He was direct and with the ball glued to his feet he caused all sorts of problems for Exeter. However, the boys in white defended valiantly, literally throwing their bodies at the ball whenever Bailey's had a sniff of a chance. However, you always felt that eventually Bailey's would find a way through and thats exactly what happened when the ball fell to Cam in the box who lashed it home with his left foot. Going 1-0 down seems to spark Exeter into life and when Wallace was pulled back when through on goal it looked like Bailey's might be cracking under the pressure. However, they managed to keep their heads until the end of the game and with it secured the win that sees them leap frog Exeter and go a point clear in the table. With Bailey's having a superior goal difference Exeter will need another team in the league to do them a favour if they are to have any chance of winning the league come the end of the season.

With only 6 weeks left in the season we are beginning to look for new teams for the next campaign. If enough teams commit to the league we will be able to extend to two divisions which will add a new dimension to the league and create plenty of excitement for all.
