Athletic star in Gerard Buxton six a side

The title race might be over, but that hasn’t stopped the teams in the midfield from giving their absolute all to try and put a marker down ahead of the new season in the Leisure Leagues Royal Wootton Bassett Monday six a side. Two teams in particular impressed this week as Athletic Bilbao Baggins and The Unplayable’s gave Bailey’s Boys and Exeter Gently respectfully.

In the first game Athletic Bilbao Baggins surprised everyone by managing to become only the second team to deny Bailey’s a win by securing a 0-0 draw. After the game stand in captain Gavin Jones was full of praise for his boys. They managed to hit the post 3 times and he said their build up play left Baileys all at sea. Surprisingly for Bailey’s they only had one shot all game and failed to create much in the way of genuine goal scoring opportunities.

With The Plough and Bass Rugby unable to make their fixtures, gifting 5-0 wins to Two Goals and Who Ate All Depays. The second competitive game of the night saw Sloblins and Gangsters take each other on. To their credit Sloblins kept fighting until the end but as with last season they were just not able to match the power and pace of Gangsters for the full 30 minutes of the football match. The final score was 6-0 to the army boys.

The night ended with FC Guava securing an impressive 4-0 win against The Underdogs. The result was much needed for the boys in red who have struggled for results in recent weeks. The win ensures that they cannot finish bottom of the league regardless of what Sloblins do in the final few weeks. It also gives the lads confidence that they can mix it with the midfield teams next season.

While this game was going on Exeter were struggling to  see off The Underdogs. The moment of the game was Exeter captain Pete hitting the cross bar from kick off with the keeper well beaten. They eventually won the game 2-1 but this doesn’t give the whole picture. Exeter’s keeper had to have one of the performances of the night to keep the unrelenting Unplayable’s at bay.

With just two weeks left in the season preparations are already underway for the new season. With one new team already signed up the time to act is now!
