Gerard Buxton comes alive to the sound of six a side

Last night showed off the best of Leisure Leagues six a side football at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground with some incredible close games, fantastic goals and a brilliant atmosphere all round.

The night kicked off with Sloblins and FC Guava, both struggling at the foot of the table going up against 2 Goals and Who Ate All Depays. Last season Sloblins caused a huge shock by beating 2 Goals and they were hoping to produce something similar last night. Unfortunately it was not to be as Callum and Sam combined brilliantly to set up an easy opener for 2 Goals. For the rest of the game they were in cruise control which will help them attempt to get their season back on track after some disappointing performances.
In the other early kick off FC Guava gave a good account of themselves but the game highlighted yet again the importance of having a regular goalkeeper that inspires confidence. Zac did an excellent job as a stand in but he was unable to hold back the tide for ever, while the other end they created good chances but could not find a way by the experienced hands of Jason in goal for Who Ate All Depays.
The second round of games also gave an opportunity for another team that has struggled so far this season to get back to winning ways. Gangsters Allardyce came up against the Unplayables who were missing some key individuals but were nevertheless a potentially tricky opponent. Kyle Brentnall was on fire for the boys in green as they set about their task with their usual hard work due diligence. The game was over as a contest fairly early on but to their credit the Unplayables kept plugging away and they were unplucky not to at least salvage a goal that would have restored their pride somewhat.
In the other game injury hit Hardley Athletic went up against the Underdogs who continue to go from strength to strength under the leadership of Rhys Floyd. In normal circumstances it is a game that Hardley would expect to win comfortably but they had to do without captain Dan Clarke and many others. This showed on the pitch as they struggled to build any momentum in the match. On the other hand the Underdogs were ruthless going forward with Matt Purcell running the show and creating chance after chance that even Hardley's excellent keeper was unable to keep out.
The final matches of the evening saw Bailey's take on a new team that has joined the waiting list because Bass Rugby were unable to attend. The game allowed Alex Shawe an opportunity to play up front and score a rare goal for the boys in blue. On the other pitch league leaders Exeter faced up against potentially tricky opposition in the form of Athletic Bilbo Baggins. The team has been excellent so far this season and they gave Exeter a real run for their money. A controversial penalty made the scoreline seem more flattering than it really should have been and still leave Athletic in a solid position in the league just behind the top two.
This concludes the nights matches. Next week is bank holiday so do not forget to let me know if you cannot make your match as we will be open as usual.
