Lean Team hold Fat and Sassy in Swindon Thursday six a side

The Swindon Thursday six a side from Swindon Academy witnessed what could be a defining moment in the season as Fat and Sassy slipped up against Lean Team. The game represented the first time they had dropped points all season and with the Lads out in front setting a scintillating pace it could be this which sees the trophy move over from Fat and Sassy to the Lads. In the other games there was a first win of the Season for Exeter Gently and The Plough won the best of the rest game with 1980s legends to solidify third place in the league. 

The first game of the night saw Fat and Sassy look to extend their unbeaten run when they took on the struggling Lean Team. The game was scrappy and neither team was able to get any sort of momentum going. It certainly wasn’t a game for the spectators and a draw was the fair result. The result could have a huge bearing on the title. With both Fat and Sassy and The Lads expected to go unbeaten all season this slip up has put additional pressure on Fat and Sassy to beat The Lads when the two sides meet at the end of the season. For Lean Team they can take pleasure from the fact that they are the first team to take points of Fat and Sassy since they were beaten in the old St Joseph’s league. 

The second game of the night was a tense affair. Ba Boys started well pushing Exeter back having a few shots but failing to find the back of the net. After riding the early storm Exeter grew into the game playing passes and creating chances of their own. However, the first half ended 0-0. A tactical switch by Exeter made the difference. Ryan made a run down the left before he slid the ball to Josh who was able to place the ball into the top corner. After that Exeter had chances to go 2-0 up but they couldn’t put them away game and the game finished 1-0.

In the third game Padgeless Plough proceed to prove that they are the best of the rest in the Thursday league. Whilst it wasn’t a classic performance from The Plough the team dug deep against a very good 1980s Legends team to gain the victory. Without the striker who is an ever present in the team The Plough had to adjust with a shuffle in formation. As a result Legends were easily the better team throughout the whole of the first half, and despite being limited to long range efforts were good value for their 1-0 lead. The second half turn around was completed by a moment of brilliance and a moment of madness. The first Plough goal came from a deflected ball flying high in the air, falling to Aj around 10 yards outside the right hand side of the box, a delicious half volley rocketing through the legends defence, past the keeper and nestling in the far top corner of the net. The second came from a goal kick to The Plough which was hit long only to be completely misjudged by the legends keeper leading to the simplest of goals for Ollie tucking it into the empty net. Dan Mak had to come to the rescue late on making several good saves from long range efforts. Credit to 1980s Legends who will probably feel hard done by with the result, but The Plough cement the 3rd place position for now, and although may not catch the leaders will fancy having a say in the title race. 

In the final game of the night The Lads took on Spezial in what was in the end a comfortable victory. The 7-0 score line in many ways didn’t do justice to the quality of football on show from the boys in blue.  They have come back for the new season with a fire in the belly and a determination to sustain a season long challenge for the title. They have recorded their seventh win in a row and with an impressive goals per game ratio to boot it certainly seems like they will be difficult to stop this season. Spezial to their credit, gave it their best effort but unfortunately were just not good enough on the night. With Fat and Sassy’s result The Lads now stand alone at the top of the table. Can they extend their lead before the crunch game with Fat and Sassy? We will have to wait and see to find out.
