MATCH REPORT: LEISURE LEAGUES SWINDON THURSDAY SIX A SIDE

In what was the penultimate night in the Leisure Leagues Swindon Thursday six a side from St Joseph’s Catholic College both Kurdistan and The Lads set up a titanic showdown when they face off for the runners up spot next week. Meanwhile 1980s Legends finally secured their first official win in the league by beating Exeter Gently. 

It was Exeter and 1980s Legends that got the night underway. It was far from a vintage performance from Exeter who are now destined to finish bottom for the second year in a row, but nothing should be taken away from 1980s who were clinical in every sense of the word. They competed for every 50:50 and took advantage of some sloppy defending at the back to put four first half goals past Exeter’s keeper. The second half of this season has been a adjustment period for the Legends. They will hope that next season they can get up to speed straight away to make their way up the table. 

Game 2 was a fiery encounter between Kurdistan and The Whippies. At the beginning of the season it appeared to many that the title would be fought out between these two teams. Unfortunately that battle never materialised. Kurdistan have simply slipped up too many times over the course of the season while The Whippies have been imperious. However, this match represented a chance for Kurdistan to show what might have been. Tackles were flying in from both sides and at half time the scores were level one apiece. Kurdistan added a second soon after the break. Then the controversial moment of the match. The Whippies thought they had added the equaliser when Bones put the ball beyond the keeper. Unfortunately for the boys in Orange the goal was ruled out for being just inside the box. The result puts Kurdistan in pole position to claim the runners up spot. The Lads now have to win next week. 

The Lads did exactly what they had to do to give themselves the best chance of finishing second. They comfortably beat Lean Team 4-0 to ensure a showdown next week. The thing about The Lads is that they have a relentless energy about them. They keep going all game and combine power and pace with an excellent passing game to leave their opponents no chance. Lean Team have been hit and miss this season. At times they have looked capable of challenging the likes of Lean Team, while at others they have struggled to string so much as a pass together. Unfortunately tonight was one of those nights. Hopefully next season they can regain their consistency and be up there challenging the top teams on a more regular basis. 

The final game saw new team Spezial FC have a run out against The Plough as they look to get some fitness in ahead of the new season at Swindon Academy. It’s fair to say they struggled to get to grips with the pace of the Ploughs game and they now know that they will have to raise their game ahead of the start of the new season in two weeks time. From the Plough’s point of view it was the perfect team performance. A hat trick from AJ was just the cherry on top of a perfect footballing cake. Their passing was slick and defensively they gave SPEZIALs no space on the ball to create anything of note in front of goal.
